What is paint correction and do I need it?
Paint correction is the process of removing surface defects from your vehicle’s paintwork — swirl marks, scratches, water spots, and oxidation — using machine polishing techniques. If your paint looks dull, hazy, or covered in fine scratches under direct light, paint correction will restore the clarity and depth your vehicle had when it left the factory. What's the difference between a machine polish and paint correction?
A machine polish is a single pass improvement using a polishing machine to enhance gloss and remove light surface marks. Paint correction is a more comprehensive process involving multiple stages of compounding and polishing to systematically remove deeper defects. A machine polish improves your paint. Paint correction restores it.
Will paint correction remove all scratches?
Paint correction removes defects within the clear coat layer of your paint. Scratches that haven’t penetrated through to the base coat or primer can typically be fully removed or significantly reduced. Deeper scratches that have cut through to bare metal require respraying rather than correction. During your consultation or vehicle drop off we’ll assess your paint thoroughly and give you a realistic expectation of results before any work begins.
How do I know which stage of correction I need?
The stage of correction required depends on the condition of your paint and the results you’re looking for. Light swirling and minor defects typically respond well to a single stage correction. Heavier scratching, water etching, or oxidation usually requires a two stage process. Vehicles requiring the absolute best possible finish — show cars, exotics, or heavily neglected paintwork — benefit from our three stage correction. We assess every vehicle individually and recommend the right package based on what we find, not what costs the most.
Can you correct wrapped or matte paint?
Standard paint correction techniques are not suitable for wrapped or matte finished vehicles as the process removes the texture that gives matte paint its appearance. We offer specialist matte safe detailing services for these vehicles. If your vehicle has a wrapped or matte finish get in touch and we’ll advise on the right approach.
How long will my vehicle be with you?
Correction work takes time done properly. A single stage correction typically takes one to two days. A two stage correction takes two to three days. A three stage correction on a heavily defected vehicle can take three to five days depending on size and complexity. We’ll give you a clear timeline when you book and keep you updated throughout with progress photos so you always know where we are.
Do I need to do anything to prepare my car before dropping it off?
No preparation is needed on your part. We carry out a full decontamination wash on every vehicle before any correction work begins, removing all surface contamination, fallout, and tar before we assess the paint condition. Just bring it as it is.s
Will I get updates while my vehicle is with you?
Yes. We send progress photos throughout the process so you can see the work developing in real time. You’re never left wondering what’s happening with your vehicle.
Do I need to protect my paint after correction?
You don’t have to, but it’s worth understanding what happens if you don’t. Corrected paint is still exposed paint. Without protection, the same environmental damage — UV exposure, road fallout, bird droppings, and improper washing — will begin affecting your paint again from the moment you drive away. Ceramic coating and paint protection film are both designed to preserve your correction results long term. We’ll talk you through your options without any pressure to add anything you don’t want.
What's the difference between ceramic coating and PPF?
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds to your paint at a molecular level, providing long term protection against UV damage, contamination, and environmental fallout while making your vehicle significantly easier to maintain. Paint protection film is a physical urethane film applied to your most vulnerable panels, providing impact protection against stone chips and road debris that ceramic coating alone cannot prevent. Many customers choose both for complete protection. We’ll help you decide what’s right for your vehicle and how you use it.
How long will the results last without protection?
This depends entirely on how the vehicle is used, how it’s washed, and where it’s stored. On a daily driver washed regularly without protection, swirl marks can begin returning within weeks from improper washing alone. On a garaged weekend car washed carefully by hand, results will last considerably longer. Protection significantly extends the life of your correction work and makes maintenance far easier in the long run.
What products and equipment do you use?
We use Rupes machine polishers throughout — the industry standard for professional paint correction. Our ceramic coatings are supplied by AutoBead, whose products we are fully accredited to apply. All products used in our studio are professional grade and selected specifically for the results and protection they deliver.
